Spring 2021
OPN continues to provide management services, ensuring patients have access to groundbreaking clinical trials, physician practices are supported with appropriate utilization management tools, and health systems can leverage OPN’s Care Management System to enhance quality of care.
OPN’s OneSource Clinical Trials Program was approached by a network physician seeking novel treatment options for a patient with recurrent metastatic lung cancer. The patient had already received two lines of therapy, but the disease was continuing to progress. The physician indicated he would probably treat the cancer with nivolumab but thought a clinical trial might offer additional benefits. The patient was enrolled in the clinical trial and received this combination treatment with good response for several months.
Lowering Patient Costs
As with all studies available through OPN’s OneSource system, the entire cost of treatment was covered by the study sponsor.
Improving Quality Data
By coordinating with OPN’s OneSource system, the study sponsors received additional quality data regarding the efficacy of the drug combination.
Supporting Physician Practices with Utilization Management Tools
The OPN Care Management Services can be leveraged by physicians to evaluate the appropriateness of certain treatments. This often results in reduced costs and improved care.
Recent successes in utilization management include:
- Investigating additional evidence-based treatment regimens
- Evaluating if alternative treatments are more appropriate based on clinical indications
- Predicting patient response to treatment
- Assessing most appropriate treatment regimen resulting in decreased side effects and total cost of care
Improving System-Wide Quality of Care
OPN serves 45,000 Medicare Advantage Members of a major Southern California Health System utilizing its OPN Care Management System. OPN reviewed 2,800 cases totaling over $8M in clinical costs in the last 12 months. The appropriateness of chemotherapy and chemotherapy support drugs, radiation oncology, molecular and genetic testing, and scans was assessed through the review process. OPN Care Management offered reevaluations on 32% of these cases, identifying alternative options for physicians to affect not only the population’s Total Cost of Care, but also enhance quality and outcomes.
Continued System Improvement
OPN actively engages with a health system’s leadership and oncologists to establish programs to enhance quality of care through clinical trials, quality measurement, and financial models.
